about mungen jewel
At Mungen Jewels, we proudly celebrate the heritage and artistry of Adire fabric, a symbol of African creativity and culture. Since the 12th century, Adire, meaning “tie and dye,” has been a cornerstone of Yoruba tradition, evolving from its origins in locally sourced cotton and natural indigo dyes to a globally admired fabric renowned for its vibrant patterns and cultural significance.
Our Adire fabrics are handmade with care and precision, ensuring each piece carries the authentic essence of this timeless craft. By blending traditional techniques with modern innovations, we create designs that honor Yoruba cosmology while meeting the tastes of today’s fashion-conscious individuals.
about mungen jewel
‘Adire’ fabric which loosely translates to the term, ‘tie and dye’, is a word that has, since the 12th
century, been used to describe a fabric that expressed the creativity of the Yoruba people and
has evolved to be a symbol of African Heritage.
In the past, Adire was made using locally sourced cottons and natural dyes like indigo which
was extracted from the indigofera plant, with the resulting designs often symbolic and
representing aspects of Yoruba cosmology and social status. However, over the centuries, the
techniques and materials used in the production of Adire have changed, by using modern (and
more colorful) dyes, and using fabrics of better quality.
